Hot Trailer: Into the Woods

New Janet Jackson Album coming soon!

So excited about this!

Vocal producer and engineer Ian Cross has confirmed that Janet Jackson has a new album in the works!

Here's more:
“Janet [Jackson] and I had a little bit more of a special relationship because we became friends naturally,” Cross told Barefoot of their ongoing working relationship. “You meet a lot of people and you become friends with a couple of them, but sometimes there is one person you become really good friends with…She asked me to work on an album with her called Discipline in 2007 and, again, just do the same thing, produce the vocals. That led to her hiring me full-time to work with her. That’s where I’m at now.”

The producer, who also helped to engineer Janet’s past three studio albums (Damita Jo, 20 Y.O. and Discipline), also confirmed that the upcoming record has been a particularly global experience this time around: “The Janet Jackson’s of the world can’t just spend their time in one studio in one city anymore…we’ve been working in Qatar. We’ve been working in Paris, the Middle East, and now we feel like we can work anywhere.”

And as for what to expect? “The new album is going to be great. It’s a process. There’s a lot in store, yet to come. I can’t go into too many details but I think Janet Jackson’s fans are going to be very excited about the new album, and I think people who don’t know her as fans are going to be excited about it, too.” So excited, indeed.
I hope this is a great CD. Janet needs this... We need this!

Former Ex-Gay Leaders want to Ban Gay Conversion Therapy

Interesting morning news.

Nine former ex-gay leaders have signed a letter with the National Center for Lesbian Rights on ending gay conversion therapy. These leaders come from Exodus International and Love in Action.

Buzzfeed reports:
“At one time, we were not only deeply involved in these ‘ex-gay’ programs, we were the founders, the leaders, and the promoters,” they said in the letter. “Together we represent more than half a century of experience, so few people are more knowledgeable about the ineffectiveness and harm of conversion therapy. We know first-hand the terrible emotional and spiritual damage it can cause, especially for LGBT youth.”

The former ex-gay leaders, many of whom worked at organizations involved in the practice for several years, say they “know better now.” And many of the organizations they were involved in have shuttered or rebranded, like Exodus International, which very publicly announced it would shut down last summer. But gay conversion therapy is still practiced in many parts of the country, according to the NCLR.
See, interesting to say the least. Read the letter after the jump

Westboro Baptist Church will host an AMA on Reddit

pic from Towleroad

These freaks are ridic! The foolish Westboro Baptist Church are planning to host an AMA on Reddit and then, protest their offices.

This is from their press release:
Reddit was co-founded by prominent member of Anonymous and cyber criminal Aaron Swartz. Swartz was a poster boy for this online community: a fag, an atheist and a thief. Last year, he killed himself when he was finally caught and charges filed against him for his crimes.

Westboro Baptist Church held a public memorial at Time Square, praising God for exacting judgment on this proud sodomite.

“For God shall bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing, whether it be good, or whether it be evil.”(Ecclesiastes 12:14)
Westboro Baptist Church will use the Reddit platform, which is usually filled with vanity, science falsely so-called, and other sundry lies; to instead preach righteousness & spread the gospel.
Pure mess!

Kentucky Poll: Opposition to gay marriage is Dropping

Times are changing in Kentucky.

Seems like the opposition towards gay marriage is dropping, according to a new study:
Results from the latest Bluegrass Poll, released Tuesday, show 50 percent of registered voters in Kentucky oppose same-sex marriage, while 37 percent favor it and 12 percent remain unsure.
That's a drop from the 55 percent who said they opposed gay marriage in February and a sharp decline from the 72 percent that voted in favor of a ban in 2004 — when the state constitution was amended to define marriage as between a man and a woman.
It's not much, but it is a change. Hopefully, the decline will continue.

Truth in Action Ministries: Judges Pushing Gay Rights Are Attacking America

This foolishness is from a group known as Truth in Action Ministries. According RWW, this is part two of "We the People: Under Attack," a film about us ruining the world basically.

Are Gayborhoods Dying out?

So, the gay neighborhoods are fading away. These meccas are becoming new spaces for straight folks. But why is this happening? University of British Columbia sociologist Amin Ghaziani may have the answers:

Ghaziani’s research, which is collected in his new book There Goes the Gayborhood, suggests that San Francisco’s Castro district, New York’s Chelsea, Chicago’s Boystown and other “gayborhoods” are changing as growing numbers of heterosexual households join or replace gays and lesbians.

He offers several reasons for the shift, including gentrification, changing attitudes among gays and lesbians, and growing acceptance of same-sex couples.

The study also identifies new demographic trends, including unexpected clusters of same-sex parents around desirable schools in traditionally straight neighbourhoods and the emergence of districts for LGBT people of colour. The findings also show that same-sex households exist in a record-high 93 per cent of U.S. counties.

Ghaziani says the greater desirability of these city districts among heterosexuals and increased same-sex couple mobility mark a crucial advance in the gay rights movement. However, he cautions that further “de-gaying” of these areas could produce a loss of cultural identity and voting power for the LGBT community.

“Gay neighbourhoods have been crucial to the struggle for freedom, and have produced globally important contributions, from politics to poetry to music and fashion,” says Ghaziani. “The growing acceptance of same-sex couples underlying these findings is extremely positive, but it is important that we continue to find meaningful ways to preserve these culturally important spaces.”

Is this a good thing are bad thing? Too soon to tell for me.

Brian Brown whines over Virginia

"We are extremely disappointed, though not surprised, with today's ruling from the 4th Circuit Court of Appeals invalidating the definition of marriage in Virginia. It is a terrible abuse of power for a court to abandon the definition of marriage which has existed throughout the history of the Commonwealth of Virginia, was adopted by the people and reflects in law the reality of what marriage is, the union of one man and one woman.
"While we condemn the ruling of the majority, we are pleased with the strong dissent authored by Justice Paul Niemeyer who noted that the 'linguistic manipulation' of case law employed by the majority to create a 'fundamental right' to same-sex marriage will also result in 'the right of a father to marry his daughter and the right of any person to marry multiple partners.' Justice Niemeyer's dissent lays bare what the majority has done — they have invented a right to redefine marriage because two justices have substituted their views for the considered opinion of the General Assembly and the voters of the Commonwealth.

"We call on the state to appeal this decision to the US Supreme Court and to vigorously fight for the truth of marriage and the right of the people and the elected representatives of the state to define marriage in law consistent with what it is in reality — the union of one man and one woman."

The Comic-Con Experience

I'm back from San Diego Comic-Con!

It was crazy, crowded and ridic... But I love it. Love it. It's always a great time. I get to see friends from all over, meet readers and Twitter followers and make connections.

While it's a geek's holiday, it's also a hot ass mess at times. Let me share with you my experience at Comic-Con.

  • It's about 4 days of madness. I get into town on Preview Day, which used to be a peaceful day before the flood of nerds. But now, it is an invasion. More folks are here on Preview Day and it's not pretty. The lines are packed, exclusive items are sold out and floor is too difficult to walk on.
  • The panels are truly worth it... Well, the educational ones. I learned a lot about writing scripts and how to get published. It was the spark I needed to get my ass in gear.
  • Cosplayers are no joke. I appreciate the work they put into their costumes.
  • Hall H... They need to really rethink the organization of the room. Folks sleep on the sidewalk to get inside that room. Then, once they get inside, they become squatters. They will sit in there all damn day. So if you didn't camp out, you don't get in. It's so ridic.
  • Their food options are horrid. Nachos, Pretzels, flat burgers and dry pizzas... No Ma'am!
  • You can see celebrities in the studio booths. It's kind of cool to see them in a nerd environment.
  • I walked 10 miles in 2 days a the con.
  • I went to the Black Panel where I saw Cree Summer and Erika Alexander. They are still beautiful women.
  • Comic-Con is also a networking event. I took full advantage of that, meeting writers, producers and publisher. Again, I got to get my ass in gear.
  • It's funny and sad to see the Gaslamp area gouge their prices for Comic-Con; mostly the parking. A spot that is normally $12 becomes $60 for the con. It sucks that San Diego allows this.
  • I realized that I rather stay at the Hotel Circle vs downtown. It's not worth it. Better to stay at the Hotel Circle, where they don't charge you for parking and you are away from the crowded restaurants.
  • I don't mind the crowds, but I hate walking like a zombie up and down the exhibit hall.
  • I didn't get much sleep... Maybe 5 hours tops.
Again, I love it, but it's draining. Thank goodness it's once a year.

Fourth Circuit Court just Struck Down Virginia's Gay Marriage Ban

Funny, I just asked which state was next...

Anywho, a federal appeals court panel ruled 2-1 in our favor, saying we have the constitutional right to marry in the state. And get this, the panel has jurisdiction over Virginia, Maryland, West Virginia, North Carolina and South Carolina.

It will most likely be appealed, I mean, it is Virginia. But isn't it nice to see these states getting on board?

A Straight White Guy Festival coming soon in Ohio?

In a gay-ish neighborhood in Ohio, there are posters advertising a Straight White Guy Festival.

As you can see below, it's a mess, but it's drawing a lot of attention.

Here's more:

The poorly-spelled flyers invite people to "come and help us celabrate [sic] our enjoyment of being straight, white and male" at Goodale Park in Clintonville, Columbus, on September 20.

They say everyone is welcome and beer will be available, but drugs are banned.

The event has been taken by some as a homophobic backlash against the gay pride festival held at the park last month.

But others believe it is a hoax. Officials say they have not received any requests for permits to hold the event, casting doubt on its credibility.

Hoax or not, folks need to be aware o this. Who knows what this really is.

Interesting Quote: Carl Jackson

Make no mistake about it: Tony Dungy is being crucified by some of his colleagues in sports media not because they disagree with him, but like Tim Tebow, because of whom and what he represents – Christ, common sense, decency and objective truth. For immoral behavior to be accepted in any culture, moral behavior as well as the source of that moral behavior (Jesus Christ) must be demonized. Political flunky and all around arrogant jerk Keith Olbermann went so far as to say that Tony Dungy is “the worst person in the sports world.” Really, Keithy? Only in a society that refuses to recognize moral absolutes can degenerate bullies like Keith Olbermann get away with spewing such nonsense and vitriol.

It’s become increasingly apparent that sports networks are following in the footsteps of MTV; they’re just as focused on shaping culture as they are displaying talent. The sports media’s hyperbolic and hypocritical reaction to Tony Dungy’s statement regarding whether or not he would’ve drafted Michael Sam proves the Michael Sam pick was just as much a political and cultural calculation for the NFL as it was legitimate.

My Thoughts on Batman v Superman's Wonder Woman

Alright, let's talk about the first look at Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman. I'll keep it real... I like it. I don't love it, but I like it.

We see the warrior in her and I appreciate the attitude she's serving, however there are some issues. So, I'm going to list my pros and cons about the costume.

  • Love the Amazonian feel of the costume
  • However, I see Xena when I first saw the pic
  • Gal has the look
  • I don't think Diana needs a sword
  • The lasso is Silver
  • These boots are hooker boots
  • And why are the boots shaped like heels?
  • Not a fan of the tiara pointing downward
  • I would like to see the colors pop out of her costume
  • I hope she's not a harden warrior
  • Can we lower the height of the boots?
  • Gal doesn't need to bulk up, but I hope to see some definition
That's all I have. Please share your views

Interesting Quote: Michele Bachmann

“This is a revolution that we are encountering now. For all of the thousands of years of recorded human history, about 5,000 years, there is no instance of any culture, nation or tribe ever having as the established standard for marriage anything other than between man and woman. It may have been multiple women and a man, it may have been something like that, but it was always between men and women. I think that nature tells us, our biology tells us that marriage is between man and a woman, when we tamper with something that was generated by the Creator of the Universe, I think there are profound consequences that we haven’t yet realized.”

Arizona Attorneys: Since Gays can’t have Children, they shouldn’t Marry

ADF Attorney Caleb Dalton

Arizona attorneys continue the ancient notion that if gay couples can't pro-create, they shouldn't be married.

See here:
Attorneys for the state are telling a federal judge there’s a good reason Arizona won’t let gays marry: They can’t reproduce, at least not without the help of a third person.

Papers filed in federal court defending the ban say voters, in approving the constitutional amendment in 2008, are entitled to “define marriage for their community.” But the lawyers also are arguing to U.S. District Court Judge John Sedwick there’s a public purpose in the state getting into the business of regulating private relationships: Ensuring that children are, whenever possible, raised by a biological mother and biological father.

“Only man-woman couples are capable of furthering the state’s interest in linking children to both of their biological parents,” argued attorneys from the Alliance Defending Freedom. And they said the vast majority of such couples produce their own biological children.
ADF is always in the midst of mess. Why do they think this argument will have weight in the case? Seriously, do they thing this will work?

A Federal Judge declared Colorado's Gay Marriage Ban Unconstitutional

Judge Raymond P. Moore struck down Colorado's gay marriage ban yesterday, however he temporarily put the ruling on hold to give the state until next month to appeal the decision.

Here's more:
Judge Raymond P. Moore's ruling was in response to a lawsuit filed July 1 by six gay couples who asked the court for an injunction ordering that the state's ban no longer be enforced.

Colorado Republican Attorney General John Suthers and Democratic Gov. John Hickenlooper had requested a stay so the issue could eventually be decided by the U.S. Supreme Court — though both agreed the state ban should be declared unconstitutional.
Haters will appeal, but lose in the end.

Never Forget: The First line of Ethnic Action Figures... Sun-Man and the Sun People

I have to share this geeky info with y'all. It truly takes me back.

Back in the mid-80s there was line of Ethnic Action Figures led by the hero, Sun-Man. Sun-Man was like He-Man. He was a great warrior and powerful due to his Black skin. His description reads:
“The Legend of Sun-Man continues… His magical melanin skin gave him unequaled, unlimited, and special super strength. Sun-Man’s skin could not be cut, burned, bruised, broken, pierced, stabbed, ripped, or removed so Pig-Head the evil wart, was plotting to smoke-out Sun-Man. He wanted to see if he could weaken Sun-Man’s powerful skin through the smoke from the drugs Pig-Head had just cooked up. But Sun-Man flies free, protecting the right for the Galaxy-Trefixa to exist in peace. His rap is clear: “Pig-Head listen, you’re bad luck. You won’t win, so just give up. Sun-Man is on the scene to stay. My good powers shall rule all the way! The Battle has just begun…””
Sun-Man was created by Yla Eason in the mid-80s. She came up with this idea because her 3 year-old son didn't have any superheroes that looked like him. In fact, there were barely any Black heroes at all. Yla wanted these heroes to give some hope that Black people can be heroes too. So, the first line of Sun-Man came out in 1985.

Later in 1986, more action figures of color were released. We had Holographo, Space Sumo (Asian), Digitino (Latino) and Bolt Man (Native American). We also saw the first line of Black Super heroines for young girls. They were Butterfly Woman, Felina and Amandla.

The line was re-released in 1989 with new characters, they never saw the light of day. Then in 1990, a special edition of Sun-Man was released, very limited.

I always wanted these action figures. I thought it would've been a great edition to my Masters of the Universe toys. But they wasn't available in Wal-Mart or Gibsons (hometown store). You had to order them from Ebony magazine. I remember keeping the ad in my Trapper Keeper, hoping to get these toys for Christmas. But my Mama accidentally threw the form away. I was so hurt, because that was the only way I could get Sun-Man and his friends.

I got over it, but I always hope to see these toys again. Sun-Man was a great idea then and I believe, a great idea now.

READ This Silly Religious Group Response to the LGBT Executive Order

The bishop-Chairmen of two USCCB Committees responded with great concern to President Obama’s July 21 executive order to prohibit federal government contractors from what the Administration deems “sexual orientation” and “gender identity” discrimination and to forbid “gender identity” discrimination in the employment of federal employees. The problems the bishops identify in the order relate both to the flaws in its core prohibitions, and to its lack of religious freedom protection.

Two USCCB Chairmen – Archbishop William E. Lori of Baltimore, Chairman of the Ad Hoc Committee for Religious Liberty and Bishop Richard J. Malone of Buffalo, Chairman of the Committee on Laity, Marriage, Family Life and Youth – together issued the following statement.

Today’s executive order is unprecedented and extreme and should be opposed.

In the name of forbidding discrimination, this order implements discrimination. With the stroke of a pen, it lends the economic power of the federal government to a deeply flawed understanding of human sexuality, to which faithful Catholics and many other people of faith will not assent. As a result, the order will exclude federal contractors precisely on the basis of their religious beliefs.

More specifically, the Church strongly opposes both unjust discrimination against those who experience a homosexual inclination and sexual conduct outside of marriage, which is the union of one man and one woman. But the executive order, as it regards federal government contractors, ignores the inclination/conduct distinction in the undefined term “sexual orientation.” As a result, even contractors that disregard sexual inclination in employment face the possibility of exclusion from federal contracting if their employment policies or practices reflect religious or moral objections to extramarital sexual conduct.

The executive order prohibits “gender identity” discrimination, a prohibition that is previously unknown at the federal level, and that is predicated on the false idea that “gender” is nothing more than a social construct or psychological reality that can be chosen at variance from one’s biological sex. This is a problem not only of principle but of practice, as it will jeopardize the privacy and associational rights of both federal contractor employees and federal employees. For example, a biological male employee may be allowed to use the women’s restroom or locker room provided by the employer because the male employee identifies as a female.

In an attempt to avoid these needless conflicts, states that have passed “sexual orientation” or “gender identity” prohibitions have overwhelmingly included protections for religious employers. When the U.S. Senate, which is controlled by the President’s own party, passed the similar Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA) last year, it included religious liberty protections as well. Indeed, all prior versions of ENDA had at least some religious liberty protections. But the executive order is an anomaly in this regard, containing no religious liberty protections. In this way, the order, which is fundamentally flawed in itself, also needlessly prefers conflict and exclusion over coexistence and cooperation.

Regarding federal contractors, the Executive Order will take effect after rules to be promulgated by the Department of Labor implementing the Executive Order become final. Regarding federal employment, the Executive Order is effective immediately.

Murray State University (My Alma Mater) Gender Neutral Restrooms

My alma mater is doing big things!

Murray State University has turned three single-person restrooms into gender neutral restrooms and they are available to anyone... Anyone.

Here's more
The Lesbian, Bisexual, Gay and Transgender program coordinator at the school, Jody Cofer Randall, says these restrooms are important to a segment of the university population.

Randall told the Murray Ledger & Times that it's "an indisputable fact" that transgender and gender non-conforming students attend Murray State.

Last September, the Student Government Association passed a resolution for LGBT equality that called for gender neutral bathrooms and other policychanges.

The university updated its policy regarding preferred first-name choices and promotion of diversity and tuition waivers for spouses and partners of university employees shortly after the resolution passed.

Rick Scott on Gay Marriage Ruling in Florida

Brian Brown whines about the Executive Order

"The fact is that non-discrimination rules like the order issued by President Obama can become a weapon used to punish and harass individuals and groups who support marriage as the union of one man and one woman. As with the flawed ENDA legislation that was rejected by Congress, President Obama's order has the great potential of putting employers in the position of standing up for their faith values or violating the new order. This will unnecessarily subject people of faith to harassing complaints and lawsuits. All manner of frivolous lawsuits could result from an action like this, and that's a dangerous thing when the courts have already shown such a lack of restraint when it comes to the question of the definition of marriage. This is nothing more than an agenda to create a cultural narrative wherein the belief in marriage as the union of one man and one woman becomes the legal and social equivalent of bigotry or hate speech. It is the next step on a path we've already seen this administration proudly pursuing, a path toward a new thought-policing state where those who hold traditional values about marriage and family are to be marginalized."
Shut up, Brian

To Netroots and Beyond

I traveled to Detroit for Netroots Nation. This was my fourth one and it was very engaging and inspiring. During this conference, I realized a few things about myself and what I should do to make some type change in the world.

Right now, I am trying to figure out next steps in my life. I could get more involved in LGBT issues, or actually take lead of an organization. Blogging has been a great outlet for my creative voice, perhaps I should do more in that area as well.

In all, I need to do something.

So, I asked to be on the LGBT Connect committee. I think it's time for me to give back to the attendees and to Netroots. I mean, I've been going for free for the last four years, it is the least I can do. Also, I want to create a panel that address the issues that beset gay Black men. There's a panel for Black women and it's always engaging. Why not do the same for Black gay men, right? I believe it could be very informative to the audience and possibly therapeutic for the panelists.

Also, I need to write more. I finally have the time and I need to hone this crazy craft of mine. So, I will start publishing more articles on Bilerico Project and Mused. I got to get my work out there, got to do something to make a difference.

Funny... These last 5 days have snapped me back to work per se. I just have to stick to it.

Hold me accountable, y'all.

Two Transwomen Murdered in Baltimore

Mia Henderson

Two transwomen were murdered in Baltimore last few weeks.

Here's the story:
Baltimore police are investigating whether the death of Mia Henderson, 26, is connected to the killing of Kandy, whose body was found June 3 in a field in Northeast Baltimore.

Both were found during the early morning, and police have no suspects in either case.

The death of Henderson, who was known previously as Kevin Long, drew a roomful of leaders from the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community to a meeting with Police Commissioner Anthony W. Batts. Batts tried to assure them that detectives were working hard on both cases.

"We want to be strong partners with our LGBT community," he sad. "Not by talk but by action."

The killings of Henderson and Kandy, who was known previously as Ricky Carlos Hall, have shaken many in the local transgender community. Advocates say some feel targeted by violence but are reluctant to cooperate with police because they're afraid of being profiled or investigated as prostitutes.
It's clear the community is concerned about the continued violence against transgender women, and we need to see action," said Keith Thirion, director of advocacy and programs for Equality Maryland.

SCOTUS: Utah Doesn't Have to Recognize Gay Marriages

The Supreme Court let us down yesterday. They said that Utah isn't required to recognize the marriages of roughly 1,000 same-sex couples there while the appeals are happening.

The NYT reports
The court’s order was two sentences long and said only that a lower court’s ruling “is stayed pending the final disposition of the appeal” by the federal appeals court in Denver.

The marriages took place between Dec. 20, when Judge Robert J. Shelby of Federal District Court in Salt Lake City struck down Utah’s ban on same-sex marriage, and Jan. 6, when the Supreme Court issued a stay blocking that ruling while the decision was appealed.

On June 25, the United States Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit, in Denver, upheld Judge Shelby’s ruling. Utah officials have announced that they will soon ask the Supreme Court to hear that case, which presents the separate and much larger question of whether there is a constitutional right to same-sex marriage.
Friday’s order came in a different case, one concerning the status of what the state calls “interim marriages,” meaning those entered into during that period in December and January when same-sex marriage was briefly allowed.

Utah officials initially sent mixed messages about whether they would recognize the marriages but ultimately said they were “on hold.” Federal officials said they would recognize the marriages.
This too, shall pass

President Obama to Sign the LGBT Job Discrimination Executive Order

President Barack Obama is set to sign an executive order banning workplace discrimination against LGBT workers of federal contractors and the federal government.

The neat part is there are no additional religious exemptions in the executive order. And, sexual orientation and gender identity have been added to the executive order.

President Obama should sign the EO this coming Monday.
